It should also recombine all the parts of a multi-part submission in the correct order regardless of the order the files are saved in. It should support files saved from mail programs and news readers. It can (and must if I want it to) stop at this point, or it can go on if it knows what to do to what it has so far (e.g. tar, tar.Z, arc, zoo, zip, etc). I would want the recombine to favor using process space as much as possible instead of temporary file space. Others might prefer the temporary file space, and of course there might be limits on either. User options should allow some control. There are several tools of this sort in the alt.sources archive, although I'm not sure if any of them do *everything* you mentioned.
