[comp.sources.wanted] Looking for a Sys V compatible mail thingie

root@nixbbs.uucp (System Operator) (06/25/91)

Hi, I'm running a SysV system, and am looking for something like FTP --
mainly, you mail my system a command, like "directory", and it does that
command and mail the request back to you. You can request it to "send"
files to you, or you can "put" (upload) files to it, by mailing. Basic-
ally, I'm looking for something as close to "FTP-by-mail" as can be had
on a SysV UNIX machine.

Is there anything like this out there, and if so, can someone please mail
it to me? (As a last resort, I have a friend with a UNIX account I can
pressure into letting me borrow, if any FTPing needs to be done...)

You need a mail-server not FTP. "ftp" is file transfer protocol and
is a "lan/wan/ether/token net" protocol. A mail-server will take "certain"
commands from the subject line of mail messages and then process them in
a prescribed way.

Try getting your friend to check out the archie program at
quiche.cs.mcgill.ca; login archie; run something like "prog server"....
that should give you a good list to peruse.
