Check out the GE Graphicon system, they claim to be ~5 times faster than the IRIS and Chromatics. The basic configuration is 12 planes at 1280x1024 into a 24 bit color table, 16 bit Z buffer and 4 Meg of display list memory. Current access is through a dma board but soon they will have an ethernet interface that speaks TCP/IP. Also soon will be a 24 bit system. The display list commands are PHIGS-like and very easy to use (so they say). Sun and GE have also put together a Sun-3/Graphicon workstation for about $66,000 (I think that's the number...). GE has given us one and it will be delivered sometime this week. If it's half as good as the promotional materials say, it will be a joy to use. I can fill you in after it arrives.
