This article describes the progress of our new post-graduate
course in Electronic Graphics, which started this year.
The course commences each September, and is the only Master of
Arts degree/linked Diploma offered in this subject in Europe. (If
anybody anywhere is running a similar course, we would be very
interested in knowing about it).
The students are mainly suitably qualified designers and artists
interested in the application of computer technology to image and
text generation. Students from other backgrounds must demonstrate
visual sensibility and graphic skills.
The main areas of study are Electronic Graphics (including
Animation) and Electronic Publishing for designers and artists.
There is a particular emphasis on the relationship between
computers and video, for example, the production of video images
using a computer.
The course runs within our Department of Graphic Design, but
there is a substantial teaching input from our Department of
Computer Science. Such cooperation between an Art and a Science
department is rare, at least in this country.
The course may be studied full time (12 months for the Diploma or
15 months for the MA) or part time for an equivalent amount of
time over a longer period.
