Two recent postings have mentioned Tom DeFanti's work (ZGRASS and the 2-bit color representation). Tom does not currently have access to the net. If you wish to reach him try the following. Thomas DeFanti EECS University of Illinois-Chicago Box 4348 Chicago, IL 60680 312/996-3002 The ZGRASS language grew out Tom's PhD thesis research on GRASS (a language developed for vector graphics -- ZGRASS is bitmap graphics). The computer graphics for the Death Star briefing in "Star Wars" was created using GRASS on a Vector General. Information on GRASS and ZGRASS is in SIGGRAPH proceedings: 1974 (if you can get them!) and 1978 pp. 33-37. His current work is on RT-1, which builds on the ZGRASS ideas. There are more references than these, I grabbed these from the 10-year index in the SIGGRAPH '83 proceedings. One of the postings mentioned that Tom is active in the Chicago local SIGGRAPH group. He was the chair of ACM SIGGRAPH for four years, is serving as the past chair now, was a co-chair for SIGGRAPH '79, and is the creator of the SIGGRAPH Video Review.
