Bay Area ACM/SIGGRAPH meeting Earcon and Eyecons Non-Verbal Communication in sight and sound Dr. Meera Blattner UC Davis and LLNL Tuesday May 26, 1987 at 8:00 PM Exploratorium, McBean Theater Topic: Icons show us how to structure graphics messages non-verbally. The iconic equivalent to messages in sound are called "earcons." Icons and earcons are used in the user interface to provide information and feedback to the user about computer entities. This information can be designed in a similar fashion to impart the same information. Dr. Meera Blatter will present a set of design guidelines for a syntax of icons and earcons. Speaker Meera Blattner is on the University of California - Davis faculty and is currently teaching at the Department of Applied Sciences in Livermore thought a joint appointment between the UC and LLNL. Her speciality involves user interfaces and data conversion and has been work working with sound and interfaces for about 5 years. Dr. Blattner taught at Rice University in Texas and was Program Director for the National Science Foundation's Theoretical Computer Science section. She received her PhD from UCLA.
