In response to the following article in net.music: %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% I always thought AOR meant "Album Oriented Rock". Not many "AOR" stations are that at all. Most play only the "hits" or single released from the album and rarely, if at all, play the other songs on the album. Too bad. Most groups styles and music can only be realized when the entire album is heard then there are some groups that should never release a whole album. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% This is almost true but not quite. AOR is a carryover from the time twenty years or so ago when often the radio stations that were NOT AOR stations did not get albums at all; only 45 rpm singles -- the hits. AOR stations, however, both got and played entire albums. A true AOR station today does not do this nearly as much as they used too, it is true. But they do tend to have specials in which they track entire albums, usually on a weekly or even a daily basis. They DO play SOME other cuts off of albums; it is typical on WKZL here in Winston-Salem to hear something like: "This is one of my favorite songs off the album, even though it hasn't made it big on the charts yet...."
