[comp.graphics] Need help on the IBM Page Scanner !!!

chiang@hawk.CS.ULowell.Edu (Rit Chiang) (08/26/87)

The University of Lowell, CS Dept., just acquired a IBM 3117 Scanner with
the IBM 3117 Extension Unit. However, it does not come with any software.
This would make it extremely difficult to test out all the hardware
and software functionalities quickly. The IBM scanner would communicate
with the Zenith-AT (IBM-AT compatible) through the serial port.

Several things I would like to know:

1) The scanner extension unit is using a 8030 Serial Communication Controller.
However, it is specified as an RS422A. What kind of pin specifications if I
want to match it up with the Zenith-AT RS232 serial port.

2) Is there any public domain software that can perform the following:

   a) interactively communicating via the serial port of IBM-AT where
different commands (protocols-including non printable ASc characters)
can be sent down and also received at the
      keyboard and monitor level.

   b) how about non-interactively then, such as a via library function calls.

If anyone on the netland can help me out with this, it would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank You.
