Those of you who have SONY BV{W,U} decks, such as the Betacam and want to use them as single-frame animation recorders connected to your framebuffers have no doubt noted that the these decks "lose" their auto-editing smarts when they are put into remote mode. The solutions available include purchasing a $nK box from Lyon-Lamb (the VAS series), pushing the auto-edit button by hand, or giving up. There is no fundamental reason that these decks could not accept an auto-edit command over the 9-pin port, just like any other command. Sony simply built it that way either for marketing compatibility or because of sheer stupidity. We have discussed this with sony, and they seem to feel that there is simply not enough demand for this feature to justify them sending out new prom sets and doc. If you have an interest in this issue please contact them and request it. Michael Natkin mjn@cs.brown.edu
