[comp.graphics] 8th Annual Graphics Gathering - call for participation and attendance

pjs@granite.dec.com (Philip J. Schneider) (01/20/88)

ANNOUNCING: The 8th Annual Graphics Gathering

WHEN: February 20th, 1988, 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm

WHERE: University of California, Santa Cruz (specifics available soon)

WHAT:
This is a FREE event, both for participants, and for attendees, and
this announcement constitutes an invitation for both. Last year,
over 200 people attended, and most of them have brought
something for "show-and-tell". Active participation in the form of
bringing something to show off is highly encouraged, but all are welcome
to attend just for the fun of it.

The Graphics Gathering, now in its 8th year, has been called "the
premier event of the computer graphics underground". Not a "convention"
in the conventional sense :-), it is an all-day affair with art shows
(featuring computer and non-computer art), speakers, demos, presentations,
panels, a PARTY (!!!), etc. This event is intended to appeal to computer
graphics experts and non-experts -- it is a highly visual, interpersonal, and
interactive gathering, and a great place to meet people. Legend has it
that the people at PDI met through an earlier Gathering.

Artsy stuff: The bottom line for the Graphics Gathering is "creativity" --
individuals (commercial artists are welcome, too :-) are encouraged to
bring their "stuff". The theme this year is "Digital Valentine's Day", and
there will be prizes for the best:
	- "digital valentine"
	- fractal valentine
	- cellular automata valentine
	- mapping of the earth onto a heart (the logo for this year)
All media are welcome -- live, tapes, slides, hardcopy, direct display, movies,
sculpture, etc., all of which have appeared in times past. Hypertext and
hypermedia valentines/artwork are also welcome. By the way, the best of
the artwork will be shown at the next SIGGRAPH!

Techie stuff: This is NOT a call for commercial representation (except
artists, as noted above) -- that is what SIGGRAPH is for. This is a
gathering for individuals to get together and show off their "neat stuff"
that they have developed. Please feel free to bring hardware/software/etc
from work/home/wherever, but do so as an individual, not as a representative
for Company X.

Featured this year will be graphics machines and software of all types,
cellular automata (and interactive programming of such beasties), real-time
c.g. automata, and languages (Lisp, PostScript, Smalltalk, Prolog, Logo, C,
Forth, etc., etc.). There will be a special panel on a US-USSR linkup
via computer graphics (hmmm . . . what DOES that mean?). Past attendees and
panelists have included John Whitney, Sr., Bill Atkinson, Scott Kim, and a
bunch of other neat and famous folks I can't recall right now :-) The
early Graphics Gatherings were one of the main inspirations for the
"Hacker's Conferences", whose attendees have included the likes of
Wozniak, Osborne, and Felzenstein.

For the time being, just assume that "(almost) anything goes"!
