I've been reading net.music for a while now, and I've noticed that almost everybody talks about relatively well-known artists. I would be interested in hearing about the local music scenes out there. Is there one where you are? Any particularly noteworthy performers, bands, clubs, trends? When you go out to hear local musicians, are you more inclined to want to dance or listen (or ignore altogether. . .) Do you ever go out to hear acoustic singer/songwriter-type stuff? Would you rather hear covers or originals? Familiar or new and different? I know that the answer is, "it depends," but I'm trying to find out if there is any fairly common set of unsated musical appetites. I'm sure there are some other (more or less) working musicians out there. What are your hopes, fears, frustrations? Let's get in touch. As you've probably guessed, in addition to being a rather mediocre computer jock, I'm an aspiring singer/songwriter/guitar player. I've been playing for years and years, in all kinds of acoustic styles, with some real solid original tunes. Guitarwise, I've been influenced a lot by John Renbourne, Jorma, Lightning Hopkins, Skip James, John Lee Hooker, Missippi John Hurt, Martin Carthy, Michael O'Dhomnaill, and some others. More generally, Rickie Lee Jones, Joan Armatrading, Bruce Springsteen, and especially Van Morrison (my hero) have made big impressions on me. I'd be very interested in getting together with other musicians who like this kind of stuff. It would be great if you were in the Holmdel/ North Jersey Shore area, but I'd be willing to drive quite a ways to meet the right folks. Finally, if anybody is free on Thursday night, I can be heard at The Dubliner in Red Bank, New Jersey (across from the train station) starting around 9 or 9:30. I'll buy a pint of Guinness (draught! another reason to come) for the first couple people to say "netnews" to me. Cheers, Andy Judkis BTL (...oops, I mean ABI) Lincroft 201-576-3219 or houxt!alj
