Toshiba doesn't seem to know anything about this one, so I'll try the net ... The May '88 issue of Byte mentions a new super-hot 3-D graphics chip. Has anyone seen this thing in action, or received any information at all as to pricing/availability/whatever? Thanks in advance. -- Mark McWiggins UUCP: uunet!intek01!mark DISCLAIMER: I could be wrong. INTERNET: intek01!mark@uunet.uu.net (206) 641-5014

The way BYTE described it, it sounded like Silicon Graphics on a chip (sort of :'). Anyways, I made many calls to various divisions at Toshiba (big, multinational, diversified companies like Toshiba are nearly impossible to deal with when you're not exactly sure what you're looking for). Since this didn't get me very far I decided to call BYTE since they are the ones who started this goose chase. (They didn't provide a product name or even a contact number in the article) So, after repeated calls to the editor of the MICROBYTES section, and after leaving numerous messages and about 2 weeks of no answer I finally got a phone number at Toshiba from another person at BYTE. It turned out to be just a general contact number at Toshiba but I was persistent, and they finally connected me to the proper division. I even got an engineer on the phone who knew what I was looking for... but...he tells me that the chip is still in the lab, it is not a product yet! The story I got at BYTE was that the author of the article talked to a Japanese engineer at WESCON in Feb. who spoke freely about it. The Toshiba engineer that I talked to seemed a little agitated that I knew about it but then, he obviously doesn't read BYTE. So much for a long story about misleading journalism..... Hope this helps clears up the confusion. -- Eric B. Rapin UUCP: {3comvax,amdahl,ames,csi,hplabs}!bnrmtv!rapin Bell-Northern Research, Inc. ARPA: bnrmtv!rapin@ames.arpa Mountain View, California

This Toshiba's 3D Graphics Chip (pipelined implementation of the scan-line algorithm) also appeared in ISSCC'88, Feb.1988. The article is VERY short, as all the other ISSCC articles are... ============================================================================== Any opinion expressed here is my own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ryutarou Ohbuchi "Life's rock."
