JOINT BI-LEVEL IMAGE GROUP (ISO/CCITT/JBIG) ADVANCE CALL FOR PROPOSALS PROGRESSIVE BI-LEVEL IMAGE COMPRESSION/DECOMPRESSION ALGORITHMS A CCITT working group involved with image communication (CCITT Study Group VIII: Special Rapporteur Group on Standard Components for Image Communication) and an ISO working group on picture coding (ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC2 Working Group 8: Coded Representation of Picture and Audio Information) have formed a Joint Bi-Level Image Group for the purpose of identifying, evaluating, refining, and/or otherwise developing one or more image compression/decompression algorithms for use with digital representations of bi-level images (typically black and white, but also including other types of two-colour images). As a minimum, such algorithms must be progressive in nature (i.e., must provide for a staged image build-up providing successively higher levels of picture integrity); must be information preserving at the final stage; and must be at least as efficient in terms of compression at the final stage as the current CCITT Group 4 MMR algorithm at its final information preserving-stage. Present plans call for a definitive requirements definition document to be available in June, 1988. Definitive proposals describing compression/decompression algorithms considered to be responsive to these requirements will then be solicited. For planning purposes, the submission date is currently expected to be no later than the end of August, 1988. Persons interested in contributing one or more algorithms or participating in the group should notify one of the following individuals: Dr. I. Sebestyen Dr. C. C. Chamzas Dr. Y.
