I was wondering if any fellow image processing types out there could reference me to literature on chosing filter kernels (anywhere from 3x3 to 9x9 and maybe larger) for various applications, ie edge enhancement, spatial bandpass filtering, gaussian smoothing, etc. I have seen a brief discussion on it in a section on template matching in "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez (I think that was the author) but nothing that really covers the topic of implementing various filters with limited resolution and kernel size. I am quite familiar with implementing such filters but I am looking for something more mathematical than empirical that takes these limitations into account. Any suggestions???
