[comp.graphics] VGA cards & graphics

I am working up to buying a VGA card and multisync monitor for my
PC/XT (8 bit bus). I have pretty much decided on the NEC Multisync II
for the monitor, as offering the best combination of performance and
price, especially after the glowing review in PC Magazine. However, the
VGA card is still very much up in the air.
I want a card with the following features:
         1) BIOS and register-level VGA compatibility
         2) support for CGA and EGA modes, as well as VGA
         3) As many enhanced modes as possible
         4) a price (from discounters) under $400
         5) and, of course, an 8 bit bus interface.
Right now, the top contender is the Genoa 5200, which I assume
fulfills 1,2,and 5 and wins 3 with 800 x 600 x 256 colors. Does anybody
know of a better card?
Also, a question concerning card resolution versus monitor
resolution. The rated resolution of the NEC Ms II is 800 x 560. I assume
(since this is an analog monitor) that it is rated in the same manner as
televisions and that the hardware is actually scanning more lines but
the numbers are the greatest number of lines that are still distinct
when displayed. Thus, if I put the card into 800 x 600 mode, I would be
pumping out more detail than the monitor could display and the smallest
details would just disappear into fuzz. Does anybody know if this is
true, or would I lose the last 40 lines off the bottom of the screen?
   Thanks.
