One commericial product I have seen which attempts to make C code transportable accross operating environments is the Extensible Virtual Toolkit from the Advanced Programming Institute in Boulder, CO (303-443-4223). Their product now runs on the Mac and PC under MS-Windows. They plan to support X-Windows. I've read some of their literature. My impresssion that by using this toolkit in conjunction with Display Postscript,a ps clone or NeWS one could write very portable code with really jazzy user interfaces that fit into the target environment.
