Rombauer & Becker's The Joy of Cooking is an excellent basic cookbook with a wide variety of well written recipes. The index, too, is very good. However, I have found that it is largely what my wife calls 'down home' cooking: basic, solid meals. The recipes for more 'gourmet' kinds of things are not as good. Also, almost always has more salt than I care for. The white bread recipe is good, though. It really does have strange things in it: including a recipe for raccoon. Rick Coates tektronix!iddic!rickc
