[comp.graphics] Ray Tracing, Mandrill Pictures

A few questions!

Has anyone had any experience ray tracing complex 3D trig equations?
For example, z = sin(sqrt(x^2 + y^2)). z = 1/(x^2 + y^2) would be nice too.
This is really icky 'cause you can't just solve for a parametric value of
t using the quadratic equation. I was thinking of applying Newton's method,
but I feel that it might be slow. Is there a better way?

Also, does anyone have a digitized picture of a mandrill they can send me?
Unpacking (data compressio, ack.) instructions would be nice too. Any
resolution would be great. (But 24 bit color would be best.)
Thanks folks!
