[comp.graphics] Jobs

henry@aplcen.apl.jhu.edu (Gary Henry ) (12/08/88)

We graphics job hunters thank you for the suggestions, but we need
addresses of these places, too. (Thanks Pixar.) Some of the places
mentioned are Sun, Silicon Graphics, Evans and Sutherland, Cranston-
Csuri, Wavefront, Digital Productions, Digital Effects, Omnibus, Magi,
III, Atari and Disney.

Although these places seem like a very long longshot, I'm going to
try. I am hoping that these places find an insatiable desire to learn
a very desirable quality; moreso, I am hoping, than the meager
knowledge one gains by taking those undergraduate courses. Is there
any better formal education on computer graphics? I read whatever and
whenever I can. Understanding a paper is one thing, implementation is
another!

Thanks, netters.

P.S. I have not heard of Cranston-Csuri, Magi or III. What kinds of
companies are they?

skinner@saturn.ucsc.edu (Robert Skinner) (12/08/88)

Don't bother with these:
Omnibus, Magi, III, Cranston-Csuri, Digital Productions

they are all out of business. The poster was being witty to those
"in the know" (they are all defunct animation houses). It was sort
of a tongue-in-cheek jab at their management.

As for these others, I at least know where they are based.

	Sun Mountain View CA, (415)
Silicon Graphics,	Mountain View CA, (415)
	Wavefront, Santa Barbara, CA (???)

You can call information at the above area codes and get the addresses.
I would also try looking at advertisements in magazines like
Computer Graphics World, and the other business oriented CG rags.

good luck
Robert

III sold their graphics operation (including the Foonly) to
Omnibus in 1984. III itself remained in business. Their graphics group
was not a large part of the company in any case.

Graphics Products Division at Sun has several open requisitions in
software and hardware development. You can send your job application
materials to me and I'll forward them to our staffing specialists. I
would recommend that you include a cover letter describing your career
objectives, a resume, a copy of your transcript (if you are still in
school and don't have much industrial experience), and possibly
reprints of any published papers (or at least some pictures of your
work).

Looking for a job is a lot of work. Apply to several companies and
learn as much as you can about these companies and their products.
Good luck.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules... (not that it would stop me...)

CrystalGraphics, Inc.
3350 Scott Blvd #29
Santa Clara, CA 95054
(408) 496-6175

is developing 3D graphics on PC-AT (currently) and other (not-announced)
platforms. We are always looking for good programmers, and often looking
for other relevant skills. Our package is a Mac-like (pull down menus...)
animation and modeling program. Send mail for more info, or call (but don't
ask for me <grin>).

The complete address for Silicon Graphics is:

	Silicon Graphics, Inc.
	2011 Shoreline Boulevard
	Mountain View, CA 94039-7311
	(415) 960-1980

Silicon Graphics has both a college recruiting program and a summer student
program. Check with your on-campus recruiting services to see if Silicon
Graphics is coming to your campus. Inquiries/resume's can be sent to the
above address about positions. Include an "Attn: Human Resources" in the
address to ensure proper routing.

I was hired through on-campus recruiting at U.C. Davis about 2 1/2 years
ago for an engineering position and have participated in on-campus recruiting
at Davis since I came aboard. I've also done some interviewing of applicants.
Here are some things you can do as an undergraduate student that will increase
your chances of a position at Silicon Graphics (and probably other companies
involved in computer graphics on workstations for that matter :^) :

Take the graphics courses offered at your school.

Do independent projects involving 3D graphics, image processing,
	user interface.

Learn UN*X. I don't mean just vi, ls, cd, et cetera. I mean
	some system aspect of it.

Get programming experience using an IRIS. Becoming an ace dog
pilot is not a prerequisite :^).

Learn more about CS than your courses have to offer. Student hires
are usually highly self motivated and come in with more than just
	classroom knowledge.

Attend SIGGRAPH if you can. This will give you an idea of what
Computer Graphics, Silicon Graphics, and applications developed
for the Silicon Graphics IRIS are all about.

Be willing to work in an area not directly related to computer
graphics. Most of the work done by engineers at Silicon Graphics
is NOT graphics application development. However, a significant
portion of engineers have a love of computer graphics and do
their own spare time graphics work.

And, on top of all that, do well in your course work. Get not just
good grades but gain an understanding of the material.

Hope this helps. Happy job hunting.
