[comp.graphics] free TIFF software

sam@ucbvax.BERKELEY.EDU (Sam Leffler) (01/04/89)

The file tiff.tar.Z in the public ftp area on ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU
contains a collection of software that supports the Tag Image File
Format (TIFF), Rev 5.0. This software is free to anyone. All that
I ask is that you notify me of any bugs that you fix.

The file is a compressed tar image (~850Kbytes) that contains:

- a library for reading and writing TIFF files,
- some tools that use the library (a program that prints info
about files, a program to copy/convert a file, simple programs
that display a file on a Pixar, a Sun cg8 display, or a SGI
  4D70 display),
- a version of Paul Heckbert's median cut program that converts
a TIFF RGB file to a TIFF palette file,
- manual pages for the library and useful tools,
- sample images, one compressed with each scheme supported by library

The library does NOT support PlanarConfiguration=2 (separate samples)
or any of the CCITT compression schemes. The LZW compression scheme
is included along with Packbits, ThunderScan, and a RLE scheme used
at Pixar (but not of any specific interest).

To retrieve the file, use the "ftp" account name (any password) and
retrieve the file pub/tiff.tar.Z (using binary mode).

I have no plans to post the software to USENET. Do not send me
mail asking that I mail you a copy of the software. If anyone that
retrieves the software wants to redistribute it, they're welcome to.

I will honor Sam's request and not ask him, but if anyone else gets
this package and can either post it to comp.sources.misc or mail it
to me I would be greatly appreciative!

I would love to get it, but I cannot use ftp outside of the company network.
Thanks for anyone who can post it or mail it to me.

I would also be interested in getting a copy, if someone would either mail
it to me or post it comp.sources.misc.

naughton%wind@Sun.COM (Patrick Naughton) (01/20/89)

I am writing code to use TIFF as the standard image format for Color and
Monochrome images in place of Sun rasterfiles. I am using parts of Sam
Leffler's TIFF library, and will contribute any fixes back to it. The
problem I am having is that each sample image I have seen is completely
different, and very few conform to the 5.0 Spec from Aldus/Microsoft. I
am especially curious what scheme NeXT used to compress the two bit
grayscale images from the Webster Disk.

What I'd like from this group is to get a wider sampling of image data
to test the robustness of the package. I'll take any public domain
images that they can set up for anonymous ftp, along with a description
of the image, and what software package created it, and some simple
characteristics of the image.

Sample Mail:

  From: imagejock@artist.berkeley.edu
  To: naughton@sun.com

I have three images on artist.berkeley.edu:~ftp/pub/tiff

rainbow.tif: 640x480 24 bit color tiff created from an AT&T Targa Board.
document.tif: 1640x1280 4 bit CCITT fax dumped from FaxOmatic.
mickey.tif: 512x512 1 bit Mac PackBits from PageMaker.

  good luck... -ImageJock.

I'll summarize my findings to comp.graphics as well as the tiff@ucbvax
mailing list.

Thanks in advance.

-Patrick

I would love this stuff, but alas do not have ftp currently available.
Why does all the neat stuff always have to be ftp'able and not other
things too - maybe we should join a few more networks.
