Can anyone provide me with information or sources for the format in which FAX machines transmit data. I would like to take a graphic in a format I am familiar with and convert it to FAX format for trans- mission directly from a modem to a FAX machine. That is, I want to write a utility to accomplish this. Thanks, J. Petersen

Petersen There are two papers I know about: CCITT Recommendation T.4 : 1988, Standardisation of Group 3 Facsimile apparatus for document transmission. CCITT Recommendation T.6 : 1988, Facsimile coding schemes and coding control functions for Group 4 facsimile apparatus. You can get those papers via your local PTT connections... Or does the FAX standard employ a different encoding standard? Do you need higher baud rates, etc...? Please forward this information to me as well. I have been researching FAX transmission for the purpose of making our satellite datacomm product manage to connect two FAX machines over a dedicated circuit. I have (excerpts from) a document: CCITT T.30 which goes into some detail about the control messages and PIX-format blocks, but doesn't say much about baud rates or modems, per se. I rather suspect that a BELL 212A or its successors won't do the trick, but some smart (and smart-a*s) modems that do the gamut of European things might. Get T.30. -Jim Hickstein VSAT Systems, Inc.
