[comp.graphics] desktop video & amiga

don@vax1.acs.udel.EDU (Donald R Lloyd) (02/18/89)

I noticed that several of you posted questions about desktop video, and I trust you've still got floods of mail coming in from amiga users recommending their machines.
I don't personally have an amiga (I'm looking forward to the day when publisher's clearing house buys me one :-) but I do know that it's video capabilities are such that in some places it is doing the work of $20000-100000 video machines at a fraction of the cost.
If you want to find out about the amiga's video capabilities, find a localamiga dealer and ask them if they have copies of the videos that commodore puts out to describe them. There are three videos out that I know of, and the dealerwill probably be more than happy to let you take a look at them.
Two of the videos are for the amiga 500, the lower-end amiga model. One is about its use in video, and one is just a general description.
The one to pay attention to, though, is called "Amiga 2000: The New Art ofthe Possible." It tells all about the higher-end A2000 and its video and graphics capabilities.
There is also, as someone already pointed out, the newer 2500 model, but as far as I know there is not yet a video for that (although everything that's said in the 2000 video still, applies, only at 2x the speed, built-in hard drive, and a 80286 card to run your IBM applications at the same time you're running amiga programs).
Also, the 2500 UX (running UNIX) should be available soon, at a slightly higher cost than the current 2500.
This isn't a my-computer-is-better-than-yours post (remember, I don't evenhave an amiga yet, and I certainly can't say "My commodore 128 is much more powerful than your Sun workstation....") so no flames, please.
