I'm about to modify a little ray tracing package I wrote to read and write "standard" images. It needs to do so both with and without color maps. I'd like to be able to choose a single format, but right now it looks like TIFF, which doesn't support color maps, is the best choice for non-colormapped data and GIF, which requires a color map, looks best for data with a color map. According to the TIFF spec, though, at some point in the future TIFF is supposed to add color map support. What I'd like to know from any TIFF expert out there is if this is still a valid claim and if so, how close is it to fruition? Also, will there be a single standard way to do it? Please reply by email. I will post or forward the answers if requested. Thanks. - Bob Lewis bobl@tessi.uucp
