You know what you should do: every one on the net should write their Congressmen and ask for the USGS to provide SAMPLE digital terrain maps on the USGS Internet hosts for anonymous FTP. I seriously doubt you could get more than samples since the database problem means warehouses of data, [can you guess how many MBs of ASCII (or non-ASCII) data that would be?] but we could pressure for sample DTMs. But it would take many letters, I think it could be done. SO long as we didn't strain USGS disk drives (consider how infrequently files would be accessed, a few initially, then lots less).
