[comp.graphics] call for DEMs

heberlei@iris.ucdavis.edu (Todd) (03/29/89)

From the USGS:
"US GeoData digital terrain tapes and digital elevation models
(DEM's) are digital records of terrain elevations for ground
positions at regularly spaced intervals. In digital form,
terrain elevations can be valuable for regional terrain modeling,
land use studies, and other scientific and engineering
     applications."

AND FOR MAKING NEAT PICTURES <- not from the USGS ;-)

I have gotten a number of responses asking where panarea.usc.edu, a
site for ftping DEMs and more, can be found. It is at 128.125.3.54

* From the response, I assume a number of people are interested in
* using DEMs. Lets try to get a collection of maps at one site (ie
* panarea-would someone from panarea indicate if this is OK?) or a
* single listing of all the places where they can be found.

PLEASE post or mail me (and I will summarize) the following:
	1) sites you know that have DEMs available for ftp (internet
address too (our host table is not the best))

	2) map locations (lat. and long.) of DEMs you have available at
your site. (please only the location, not the data file)

	3) areas from which you would like to see DEMs

I am interested in purchasing a number of maps, but they can get
expensive for my pocket book. For 6 or more 7.5x7.5 minute DEM maps
the cost is $90 + $7*number_of_maps. This is cheap for an
institution; however, so if any institutions want to spring for some
(Ames, JPL, university IP labs (UCD?)???), please join in!!

PS.
For information on DEMs call or write to the address below. I found
this on panarea It took them about two weeks to mail me some information,
so be patient.

The format of DEM map files is described in the publication "Digital
Elevation Models, Data Users Guide" available from:

	National Cartographic Information Center
	U. S. Geological Survey
	507 National Center
	Reston, VA 22092

NCIC distributes DEM data on a variety of formats by mail.
This data was obtained by Gary Crum while at the University of Utah, and it
is being made available by ftp because USGS data is not copyrighted.
