First of two postings: Okay, details are in. The Bay Area Local Group of ACM/SIGGRAPH will be holding a Technical Interest Group meeting on Scientific Data Display for Valley companies and Bay Area users on Thursday April 13. The meeting will occur at 7 PM in Building 8 at SUN Micro Systems. Requirements: 1) membership in Bay Area ACM/SIGGRAPH (figures, right?) $10 payable at the meeting if not already a member 2) demonstrated interest in scientific data display (preferably at least a year), unless you are associated with a hardware vendor (inputee). To show your interest, I am requesting at least a paragraph in writing (email is fine) telling about the background of your scientific discipline's display requirements. You should also be prepared to make at least a 5 minute statement. This really isn't alot, we will most likely just give you a nod anyway, but we would like something which people can take away with them. 3) People with ties will be shot on sight. 4) There is no rule #4. Underground arrangements are being made (various parties are being nice to Cc: me). So far representatives from various communities will be coming: NASA, USGS, IBM, aeronautics, geology, biology, chemistry, image processing, cartography, etc. The manufacturers of several different pieces of hardware have also kindly agreed to appear. So we have to balance attendees. We will attempt to record discussions for benefit of those unable to attend. Steve Keith (SUN) will try to provide A-V (if you have requirements beyond 35 mm slides, Vu graphs, or tape (let me know format), let me know). SUN will also provide a light sandwich dinner which we as participants will reimburse SUN (bring a few $$s). If are are coming from just outside the Bay Area, we can help make limited lodging reservations, etc. My plan is to simply to make some opening remarks, and structure some discussion of requirements for next generation visual systems. We will try to meet quarterly. I hope we can maintain a semblence of balance.
