[comp.graphics] Wanted: image format review and doc

phil@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu (04/25/89)

I am about to complete a new high speed Mandelbrot/Julia plotting program
(in assembler for IBM 370 only) and would like to produce output in some
format that makes sense, i.e. includes image parameters as well as content.

I have examined the GIF format (version 87a, is there a better one out?)
and found that it is too limited to handle the images I will be producing.
Of course I could always cut the quality and fit them in, but I'd like to
make the full images available as well. In particular, the GIF limit of
256 different values each pixel may have is the most limiting factor.
Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to code an image without a color map.

I'd like to look into the TIFF format, but I cannot find documentation.
I go onto a NeXT machine and searched every file I could and found no
documentation on the TIFF format.

What other formats are there?

Should I create YAIFS (Yet Another Image Format Standard)? I'm sure there
are already plenty, but I can't find documentation on any that seem like
they can work.

You might look at the IFF format used by Electronic
Arts & many others. It was adopted as the default for
	Amigas.

It has no 8-bit or other hardcoded restrictions of
the parameters. I beleive it has animation support
	in the latest version.

Information can be obtained from Commodore - try
"carolyn@cbmvax" for information on how to receive
	machine-readable docs & source-code, etc.
