[comp.graphics] US Geological Survey Maps

milo@ndmath.UUCP (Greg Corson) (05/27/89)

I'm wondering what the copyright & distribution status of US geological
survey maps (on Database) and NOAA/coast guard navigational charts (on
database) is.

Since these items were developed by the Government, are they considered
in the public domain? Can they be freely distributed by anyone?

Assuming these things can be distributed, is there anyplace I could FTP
one of these maps from, just to get a sample of how the data is organized?

Any information would be appreciated.

The maps are in the public domain. If the government supplied the
data base, the data base should be in the public domain as well. If
a private company generated a data base based on the maps, I suspect
the data base will be copyrighted.

I would very much like access to such a data base as well.

USGS data is not copyrighted.

"An Internet archive for maps of geographic-scale maps has been set up,
starting with data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC), specifically a map
of terrain in USGS Digital Elevation Model (DEM) format.

"The archive is on host panarea.usc.edu [128.125.3.54], in anonymous FTP
directory pub/map. Gary Crum <crum@cse.usc.edu> is maintainer.

"The pub/map directory is writeable by anonymous ftp. Approximately 50M
bytes are available for the map archive as of this writing.
