[comp.graphics] Converting Analog Bandwidth to bps

golds@rlgvax.UUCP (Rich Goldschmidt) (07/11/89)

I am curious about how one converts between analog and digital bandwidths.
The particular issue which has aroused my curiosity is video. The signals
broadcast for TV have a bandwidth of 5 or 6 MHz. However, I have heard
of varying requirements for digital video of between 30 and 90 Mbps. My
own back of the envelope calculations based on the pixel content suggest
a minimum of 45 Mbps, but there must be a more formal method for calculating
this conversion based on the sampling frequency. Any ideas about what
the right formula is, the right numbers for video (full motion, color), and
what the same numbers might be for HDTV?

And how effective are encoding methods?
