I am seeking references (or code) relevant to modeling the surface of a sphere or ellipsoid. Given a number N and perhaps some "origin" I would like to get N points on the surface of the sphere (polar coordinates). The points should cover the sphere as uniformly as possible in the sense that each point represents a patch of area (a triangle from some geodesic?), the patches are all the same size, and the union of the patches approximates the sphere. It seems to me that this has probably been done in a number of ways before, any pointers would be appreciated. Glenn P.
