[net.music] Suggestion for DeadHeads

woods (02/17/83)

In light of the recent message posting the upcoming Eastern tour, I have
a suggestion for those who enjoy travelling to Dead shows. If you make one trip
this year to see the Dead, come to Colorado when they play Red Rocks this
summer. Not only is Red Rocks Amphitheatre one of the most beautiful places
in the world to see a show, but the Dead really love to play there so the shows
are always really hot. Last summer it rained for three straight days, but the
Dead stayed at the Rocks instead of moving to (ugh!) McNichols' sports arena.
We would all have rather been soaked at Red Rocks than suffering the awful
acoustics of McNichols!
Red Rocks, for those who have never heard of it, is a natural bowl in the
rocks in which there have been cement risers and wooden benches installed.
It holds about 9-10 thousand and has lots more room per person than most
indoor or stadium shows. Plenty of room for dancing! It features a view of
the lights of Denver at night (it's about 15 miles west of the city and ~1000
feet higher), and of course the incredible splendor of the huge rocks rising
way up on each side of the audience. The acoustics are very good as well.
I have some studio-quality (no lie!) tapes from last year's shows.
If I sound prejudiced it's because I am! Any of you non-Coloradans ever
made it to the Rocks? What did YOU think?

There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert ON THE ROCKS,

P.S. I loved the bootleg T-shirts they had three years ago there. It had a
swizzle stick in a glass with a skull on top, and said "DEAD ON THE ROCKS".

While not a DeadHead, I agree that Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Denver
is an incredible place. If you're ever in Denver and have a few
hours to kill, get a car and drive out to see it, even if there's
not a concert there at the time. Lot's of groups like to play there,
because the sound is good and the sight is like nothing else on earth.
The Pretenders played their last Denver gig there, and may not have
stopped in Denver at all but for the Rocks. Seeing the Denver
Symphony is wonderful at Red Rocks. While the Denver Symphony is
not the greatest, they always pick the right kind of music to
play.
