From Softies to Knots: The Graphicsland Animation System Brian Wyvill The University of Calgary The Exploratorium Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco September 26, 8PM Over the last 5 years the Graphicsland Animation system has been constructed as a research testbed for ideas in modelling, motion control and rendering. Methods for modelling and animating implicit surfaces have been developed as well as work on combining such models with skeletons driven from dynamic simulations. Ray tracing algorithms for multi-processor environments have been developed along with fast methods for finding ray - surface intersections. Work on facial animation driven from synthesised speech along with recent results using generalised cylinders to produce models of knots and woven cloth will be presented. Various animation sequences have been made and the talk will be illustrated with slides and video including a preview of the forthcoming, yet to be finished movie: "Lunch at First Sight". Brian Wyvill is a professor of computer science at the University of Calgary and is currently on leave at Xerox PARC. -- "Common sense isn't" Julian "a tribble took it" Gomez julian@riacs.edu
