Thanks to everyone who replied to my question on GIF sites. (For those who are interested, I tacked on the information I received on the sites.) After overcomeing the problem in reaching FTP sites, I ran a couple more problems. The first problem is that Grape.ecs.clarkson.edu wont/cant connect to telnet. (same problems albanycs.albany.edu, ix1.cc.utexas.edu, ix2.cc.utexas.edu, and simtel20.army.mil ) I can connect up to 6 other sites (hubcap.clemson.edu, syx.ucsc.edu, sumex.standford.edu, surya.waterloo.edu, umn-cs.cs.umn.edu, uxe.cso.uiuc.edu ) but receive a 'LOGIN :' and a 'PASSWORD :' prompt. Are these resticted systems? I thought that were open for the genral user. If they are open to the genral user, what do I login under? Send mail to root if you need to delete or overwrite a file. To help us keep the 'files.bbs' up to date, we need a .DSC file. This file should have its first line be a one-line description less than 40 characters in length. The rest of the file (no more than ten lines) can be a more verbose description. Either put the file in the arc, or else in the same subdir as the arc. ***********************************************************************

If they are open to the genral user, what do I login under? The prompts are actually from your FTP program, which will send them to the FTP server as USER and PASS commands (internal FTP client to server commands). Just use "anonymous" as the userid, and use your domain style e-mail address as the password. If you have trouble with uxe.cso.uiuc.edu then please let me know. --Phil howard-- <phil@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu>

Actually, this article is only remotely assiociated with GIF sites. We have quite a collection of rasterfiles of all sizes here at geomag. You can use the fbm package by Michael Mauldin to convert from Sun rasterfiles to GIF files. The main reason why I have chosen to keep them as rasterfiles, rather than convert them to GIF is that on the Sun the rasterfile viewers are neater. In any case. anonymous ftp to geomag.gly.fsu.edu (128.186.10.2) cd to pub/pics and download any pics you want. In the future, once I get the latest fbm package, I will post it there as well. We have a good collection of files ray-traced on the eta-10g with QRT by Steve Koren. The longest time taken (for blue.rst.Z) was 1 1/2 hrs. The small ones (640x400) went in usually under 15 minutes. In any case, they are quite interesting. ---Since I have not expressed any opinion, there is no need for a disclaimer, in my opinion--- --- Prem Subrahmanyam

I know there seem to be constant requests for format specifications but after scanning 800+ back messages I couldn't seem to find what I needed. My friend has a scanner for a Mac that produces PICT files (PICT2 ?). He wants me to write a utility that will convert such files to RLA format on his Tektronix machine. Unless this already is available in PD, would someone please point me toward the format specifications for PICT? He also does 32bit images if there are different formats (i would need both). Thanks Very much for your help. [please email] --wayne (iba@ics.uci.edu)
