[comp.graphics] Info on TI-developed 3D display?

mckenney@talos.uucp (Frank McKenney) (10/09/89)

In a recent issue of PC Week (Sept 25?), John Helliwell's column
("The Hard Edge") describes a spinning-platter approach to 3D
display which has been developed at Texas Instruments (Dallas).

The display surface is described as "an oddly shaped translucent
white platter about two feet in diameter, spinning rapidly around
a vertical pillar". The surface is illuminated by a mirror-
directed laser which is modulated so as to reflect off the
spinning surface at the appropriate point in time. The
description reminds me of the "flying spot scanner" approach to
video transmission.

Does anyone have any information on this gadget? Name? Journal
articles describing it? Where To Send Box Tops? (;-)
