[comp.graphics] FURNESS TO SPEAK ON "EXPLORING VIRTUAL SPACE"

bluefire@well.UUCP (Bob Jacobson) (10/22/89)

Tom Furness, creator of the "Super Cockpit" for the USAF and 23-year
veteran researcher in the field of virtual interfaces (so-called
"virtual realities") will speak at the University of Washington
this Thursday, October 26, at 12:30 PM in Elec. Eng. Bldg. 321.
This lecture is open to the public.

Furness, who recently left the USAF Medical Laboratory at Wright-
Patman AFB, is now director of the new Human Interface Technology
Laboratory at the University of Washington. Its charge is to develop
civilian applications for virtual-interface technology in the areas
of human-complex systems interactions, entertainment and creativity,
education (including "learning prostheses" for the learning disabled),
and biomedical research and health practice. Furness is considered one
of the leading authorities on virtual interface technology/systems.

Is this work going to help the _computer_ learning disabled, i.e. those
people who are otherwise intelligent but are incapable of learning anything
about computers?
