[I just mailed this to SIGGRAPH90Committee.SIGGRAPH@Xerox.com. I thought the community might be interested as well.] I have a suggestion for a unique art exhibition that Siggraph might be able to have in Dallas. My guess is that the downtown Hyatt Regency (Reunion Square?) is going to be one of the hosting hotels for Siggraph '90. My guess is that this hotel stands to make a lot of money off of Siggraph '90. I also guess that this hotel has some influnce over the tower immediately next to it. As most people know, this tower is a prominent part of the Dallas skyline (it is arguably the most notable part of the skyline). The top of this tower has a spherical array of lights that are computer controlled. Some nights the tower puts on some fairly interesting light shows. An idea: The Siggraph '90 film or art shows might accept works that are "displayed" on the Hyatt tower. If the parties that run the tower give permission, then Siggraph '90 coordinators would need to make public the following kinds of information: [1] Physical arrangement of the lights. [2] Constraints about what combinations of lights can be turned on and off at different times, "refresh" rates, intensity ranges, etc. [3] Some kind of interface for controlling the lights. Also, somebody would have to write a previewer that understood the interface and displayed performances on widely-available platforms. Just an idea.....which might be more trouble than it's worth. -- Kelvin Thompson, Lone Rider of the Apocalypse kelvin@cs.utexas.edu {...,uunet}!cs.utexas.edu!kelvin -- -- Kelvin Thompson, Lone Rider of the Apocalypse kelvin@cs.utexas.edu {...,uunet}!cs.utexas.edu!kelvin
