[comp.graphics] What are GEM.IMG files?

rcsmith@anagld.UUCP (Ray Smith) (10/23/89)

One of the folks I work with has prepared a bunch of stuff using
GEM on an IBM PC compatitable. He wants to print them off on our Mac
connected Laser Printer. So I thought great lets use PBM-PLUS and convert
them from GEM to MACPAINT. Well when I went to translate the files PBM
required the GEM files be in a .img format and mine evidently weren't.
Would someone please explain to me what the .img format is compared to the
GEM format we have and also tell me if there is a way to convert from
what we have to the other.

Thanks in advance,
Ray

P.S. If there is an easier way to do what I need to do here please point it
out.

GEM files are vector-based graphic files and IMG are bit-mapped. The
only way I know of (for lack of a utility pgm to do this) to convert GEM
drawings for output on a PostScript device is to use DRI's Artline drawing
program and export to Encapsulated PostScript, then transfer it to the
Mac system.

I'd like to find someone who knows (where I can learn) about the .IMG
file format that GEM uses... I have a 640 x 8-color printer (Radio
Shack CGP-220), which goes well with GEM except that Digital Research
never wrote a printer driver for it (and wants $1,500 for the tools just
so I can write my own!!) . From what I can tell, .IMG files are
substantially compressed bitmaps (with some header information), but I
can't deduce enough from them to decode them.

If anyone knows the format, or a resource where I can find it, I'll be
able to write a .IMG file printer (almost as good as a print driver),
and maybe some useful translators as well.
