I won't pretend to really understad all this, but... We built a map of the world on our 3D computer animation system a few years back. (When I say we, I mean my predecessors at the company). The map was built on a 2D plane (x and y). All the co-ordinates were digitized into a database. Then, once the flat data had been triangulated at a high resolution, it was run through a program that wrapped the data onto a sphere.
