[comp.graphics] Dymaxion map, spherical c

I won't pretend to really understad all this, but...
We built a map of the world on our 3D computer animation system a few
years back. (When I say we, I mean my predecessors at the company).

The map was built on a 2D plane (x and y). All the co-ordinates were
digitized into a database. Then, once the flat data had been
triangulated at a high resolution, it was run through a program that
wrapped the data onto a sphere.

It worked great, and we have used the technique several times since.

I hope this gives you rough idea of what I'm trying to say!
