Each member of SIGGRAPH and subscriber to "Computer Graphics" will soon receive their copy of the SIGGRAPH'89 proceedings along with a copy of "Computer Art in Context", the full-color SIGGRAPH'89 Art Show Catalog published in "Leanardo," the Journal of the Interational Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology. The mailing has been delayed while we recovered from shipping problems after the conference. Over 2,000 copies were misplaced somewhere in transit; we have recovered sufficent copies to satisfy our mailing of approximately 13,000 copies. Each copy will be boxed for safe handling and will be mailed fourth class book rate. Richard J. Beach SIGGRAPH Editor-in-Chief <Beach.SIGGRAPH@Xerox.com>

I was a little upset when a local bookstore reveiced copies before I, a SIGGRAPH member, received mine. Alan D. Cabrera adc@cpsvax.cps.msu.edu

It was announced at various panel sessions of SIGGRAPH '89 that the panel session's discussion was being transcribed, and would be made available to attendees. I'm not a member of SIGGRAPH, but I'm very interested in the transcripts. Are they being mailed to attendees? --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul Klemond paulkle@microsoft uunet!microsoft!paulkle My employer bears no responsibility for what I say. I don't know if they will be available for sale separately. Rick should be able to give a more definitive ETA and distribution answer once he's back on line... Brian Herzog herzog@sun.com

[[Sorry, but PARC was off the air for a few days due to the Loma Prieta earthquake in Northern California. This is a delayed response. RJB]] To clarify the situation, here are a few more details about shipping the SIGGRAPH proceedings. 1. The misplaced copies were the SIGGRAPH'89 art show catalogs; we have had lots of conference proceedings all along but we wanted to ship both in the same box. 2. The screw-up has been discovered -- a miscount of the shipment at the mailing house. 13,000 art show catalogs were shipped on 2 pallets of different sizes; the smaller pallet was counted and the number doubled, revealing that 2,000 copies were missing. When the paper trail appeared to be normal, the count of indivual boxes was retaken -- oops -- a very embarrassed mailing house!!! 3. The mailing is underway with utmost haste. 4. The bookstore copies are from an arrangement with ACM Press and Addison-Wesley, who distributes the SIGGRAPH conference proceedings through booksellers. I think the price is about $49. And because they only distribute about 1,000 copies, obviously it can be done more quickly. SIGGRAPH is acutely aware of the problems in shipping conference proceedings after the conference. About 5 years ago, we switched to individual boxes to protect the heavy proceedings from damage during shipping. After long delays two years ago, we switched mailing houses to one that could get sufficient labor to box and ship 13,000 proceedings. Last year we got the proceedings mailed in a timely fashion (they still take a couple of weeks because we use fourth class postage in the USA). This year, we go t sidetracked because we wanted to ship 2 books (the proceedings and the art show catalog) together and it looked like we had lost 2,000 catalogs. Grrrr... Richard J. The question is Sigrad should allow that A-W distributes the copies to the bookstores before the members got their copies. The booksellers should have their copies AFTER the members got theirs. I dont care if it was only 10 copies, this is a matter of fairness. Do you think that the members is pleased to see that the stores got higher priority? It is as simple as this ACM says that A-W has no right to distibute it to the booksellers before the procedings has reached ALL members. There is lots of other good graphics literature about that you can catch up on while you wait. The next thing you know you'll object because people who go to the conference get a copy of the proceedings earlier than all the other members. -- Eugene Fiume Dynamic Graphics Project University of Toronto elf@dgp.toronto.edu

Latest information: the proceedings will be mailed Nov 1. Details: ACM is cutting the check to pay the postage (a big amount) and the shipment will be delivered to the US Postal Service early next week. Expect delivery to take a couple of weeks. Cheers Rick Beach SIGGRAPH Editor-in-chief
