I have been deservedly scolded. In my original earnestness to defend a favorite group (there is indeed nothing like a Dead concert on the rocks), my reply was both scattershot and wrong. Scattershot, because I included all (or nearly all) bands, and wrong, because I included a band that has changed quite a bit ("Quadrophenia" does differ somewhat from "My Generation" -- I should know, I own both). What I should have said is that bands make the music they want to make (insofar as their contracts allow them), and that a band which continues to want to make the same kind of music is not necessarily bad. Thus are the Grateful Dead defended. I'll stand by some of what I said, though. Nearly all of modern heavy metal sounds like my Slade albums to me, and did you notice, Andy, the Yardbirds album in the "heavily played" section of the KCMU playlist (submitted to net.records)? greg
