[net.cooks] What makes microwave popcorn special?

Is a special type of popcorn used, or is there just special preparation
and packaging (i.e. can it be done at home)?

It's nothing special; you can use regular popcorn. You don't even need
special packaging, as long as you've got a container that's safe for
microwave and can take the heat. There are several "corn popper" gadgets
for microwave ovens which make it a little easier. They contain the corn,
let the steam escape, and are shaped so that as the corn pops the unpopped
kernels drop down and congregate at the center of the popper (which is
typically an area of stronger microwaves).
