It seems that almost everybody is getting out of the GIF business. I want
to get a ton of GIFs downloaded from somewhere to supply to a local BBS--a
half-promise I made to them when I said I could get over 8 MB of GIFs over
Internet.
As I said, many people are pulling out. This is not an intrinsically "bad"
thing; they do explain why they are quitting (insufficient disk space,
usually). However, finding a machine that does have GIFs has turned into a
wild goose chase. Machine A says, "We no longer have GIFs, but Machine B
has as good as (or a better) selection than we did. Sorry!" So I go to
Machine B, which says, "We no longer have GIFs, but Machine C (or even A!) has
what we had." It's a bit frustrating!
I tried out several computers on a list that said they have GIFs and turned up
5 that have discontinued their collections:
surya.waterloo.edu
wuarchive.wustl.edu
umn-cs.cs.umn.edu
lut.fi
hubcap.clemson.edu
I hope this saves someone else a big hassle. Please mail responses to
saa33413@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu or free0066@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu; I don't normally
access this group.
