Hello there again, Last week a had asked about what toolkit/widget-set to use for the implementation of a graphical interactive query tool for examining a database containing model data. Thanks to all who replied to that request ! To satisfy the graphics requirements we have decided to take look at PEX (Phigs Extension to X). We had heard that PEX would become available along with X Version 11 Release 4, but it is not part of the sources we've received. Could anyone please point me out where I can get a copy of the PEX source, what status PEX is in and indicate why it didn't appear among the XV11R4 sources ? The *PEX Protocol Definition* (v4.0P) went out with X11R4, NOT the PEX source. (BTW for those of you following the development of the PEX protocol, it's destined for yet another crank turn -- hopefully the last for a while -- this summer, so watch the "x11-3d@expo.lcs.mit.edu" mailing alias for announcement of availability of the new spec. Oh, and *please* send all requests regarding that alias to "x11-3d-request@expo.lcs.mit.edu" thanks!) The PEX Sample Implementation (PEX-SI) effort which is chartered with producing the source of which you speak will make its release to MIT and shortly thereafter the public (via regular X11 tape distribution) in January 1991. Earlier releases are also being made to various sponsoring consortium groups in the meantime. Unfortunately, if you are not among the consortium groups who are slated to get the early releases, you will have to wait for the public release through MIT. - Marty Hess, PEX-SI Project Manager (415) 960-1300 Applied Graphics Technology -- PEX-SI Project, Mail Stop A1-43 Sun Microsystems, 2550 Garcia, Mountain View, CA 94043-1100 {ucbvax,ihnp4,decvax,decwrl}!sun!mhess | mhess@Sun.COM

The pex sample implemention is being done by Sun Microsystems and is being funded by a consortium of sponsors. Sun began work on the sample implementation just over a year ago and is funded for a two year development effort. The sponsoring companies has access to pre-releases of the work in progress as part of their reward for funding the development effort. Pex will not be distributed by MIT until the development is finished, right now it appears as if this will be 1st quarter 1991. -- John Dennis E Mail: johnd@Stardent.COM | {uunet, convex, decvax}!stardent!johnd Snail Mail: Stardent Computer, 85 Wells Avenue Newton, MA 02159 Voice Mail: <Work>(617) 964-6228 x243 <Home>(508)366-7976

The "PEX Demonstration Implementation" was a part of the R3 release (in the contrib directory). It is (for some reason) not in R4, but I think it will drop in easily if you can find it. This implements a (small) subset of the full PEX functionality, but is useful for many applications. -- =Spencer (spencer@eecs.umich.edu)

We had heard that PEX would become available > along with X Version 11 Release 4, but it is not part of the sources > we've received. The PEX Protocol specification is part of the R4 distribution. Not the source. See X11R4/mit/doc/extensions/PEX/* > Could anyone please point me out where I can get a copy of the PEX > source, what status PEX is in and indicate why it didn't appear among > the XV11R4 sources ? You can get a copy of the source by waiting about 1 year. There is a PEX consortium that is funding a sample implementation. That sample implementation will be released to MIT at the end of this year, 1990. At some point after that it will become part of the X distribution. The sample implementation is not too far off schedule and will be available to X consortium members as part of alpha and beta programs this summer and next fall. Of course, if you are writing applications then you should be adapting to the PHIGS application program interface (API). That is what PEX will export as the interface. -Jan Hardenbergh - jch@apollo.hp.com - HP/Graphics Technology Division
