[comp.graphics] spot computerized maps

ahlenius@cell.mot.COM (Mark Ahlenius) (02/21/90)

I don't know if this group is the right one to post for
this question - but here goes anyway...

Can anyone give me any information on a land resource satellite
system called SPOT? From what I understand it is used to
generate a digitized terrain map of various geographic regions.

I am would like to know:
	how to get these maps
	what format they are in
do they indeed contain terrain type and elevation
	etc.

Please either email directly to me or post reponses here.

	thanks in advance...

The last address I have is:

But I notice two queries for maps.

WARNING! Satellite images are not maps!
If your intent is only to have a cute bit maps for workstations,
no problem. Buy to your hearts contents. BUT,....
Raw images are deficient from maps on several counts. The process
is worth several PhD theses on geographic information systems/image
processing, and other aspects of graphics, but raw images should NEVER
be used as maps requiring ANY accuracy, subject to knowing the processes
which created these images. You might hear of things called
"ortho-photographs" these are not maps and nor are they raw images.
They are better, but should NOT be used as maps either.

Another gross generalization from
