[net.cooks] Spice sources mostly NYC area but by mail too

stu3@mhuxh.UUCP (Mark Modig) (11/28/84)

Well, the responses have stopped coming in, and I have had a chance
to check out a couple of the places referenced. One note before I
continue: someone sent mw mail citing a place in New England I believe,
unfortunately I dropped the ball when dealing with the mailer, and
I believe I lost the message. My apologies to you. A short list of
places in and around NYC follows:

Zabars, 80th St. and Broadway, NYC
Balducci's, 9th St, NYC
Casa Moneo [Mexican spices], West 14th. St.
Gingergrocer, Montclair, NJ
Aphrodisia, Bleeker St. just down from 7th Av., NYC

Casa Moneo is a really nice place; they are a Mexican grocery
really, but they do have a selection of spices used in Mexican food.

Aphrodisia really takes the cake, tho. You name it, they've got it
or can get it. They have a tremendous selection of not only edible
spices, but herbs and spices valued for their scent as well
(lavender, etc.) They even have two types of catnip! They also have a
lot of "healthy" type
merchandise, honey, dried fruit, books on holistic medicine, etc. If
you are ever down in Greenwich Village and you have a little time to
spare, you should check this place out. Prices seem fairly
reasonable to very good.

I can't tell you a specific place in the NYC area, but I would
recommend trying to find a local food co-op. Surely, if we have
a co-op here in Bloomington, Indiana there must be one in NYC.
The one here is chock full of spices that you buy in bulk at
incredibly cheap prices compared to buying things at the grocer's.
Actually, though, when I was home to Buffalo many of the big grocers
had lots of bulk foods too. But I think a small place would be your
best bet, because a place like a co-op will order anything for you
that it doesn't already have in stock. There's also a health food
store (not of the GNC variety) in town that sells bulk spices,
so that's another type of place to check into.

Hopefully, someone will be able to give you more specific info
about someplace near you, but otherwise you could just get out
your phonebook. You could also check at your library for a
directory of co-ops in the area.
If you're unable to find anything, I'd be
happy to mail you anything from here. Good Luck hunting!!

Try Zabar's on 80th St. and Broadway or Balducci's on 9th St.
and 6th Ave (and then go down the street and have ice cream
at Steve's).

re: spices

Try the Gingergrocer, in Montclair NJ.
They take phone orders and ship UPS, or
you can visit them (45 minute drive from MH)

Mark,

Don't know if this will be any help, but several (MANY) years ago I got
a catalogue from Aphrodesia (sp?) which I seem to remember was in NYC,
and it had every spice in the whole world in it. I have not, however,
seen it listed as a source in exotic cookbooks, which.....would be a good
place to look. A lot of Indian, Eastern, etc. cookbooks include an
appendix of places that sell the supplies, spices, etc. for the food.
