[comp.graphics] RenderMan displacment shaders

Does anyone out there know how to do a RenderMan style displacement shader?
I just finished parametric surfaces and the only major part I have left is 
those $#@&! displacements.  I must be confused because the only way I 
can think of is doing them with some awful interative process.  I've 
been able to find info on volume rendering and on rendering objects 
warped with weird (but regular) functions but nothing on their style of 
displacement rendering.  Any direction will help.
