[comp.graphics] color scanner recomendation needed

sparks@corpane.UUCP (John Sparks) (03/13/90)

We are looking for a hi-res (around 300 DPI) color scanner.
Not a video digitizer, a scanner. Looks like a printer or a copy machine.
Feed in hardcopy and it scans and digitizes it. We have seen several
300 DPI black and white models, but we need one that does color.

I am at a loss. Is there such a beast? If you have any hint at all for us,
please email me. It doesn't have to be 300 DPI, but the higher the better.

Thanks

Reviews of Sharp JX-450 and Howtek Scanmaster. They cost $7000-$8000 but
both are the same "engine". Too expensive for us!!

I love the Howtek, it's 300 bpi in full color and it works great! I don't have
the phone number of Howtek on me, maybe you can call the 800 information number.

I have been giving the Sharp JX-450 some serious thought. I have used one in
the past and they do a wonderful job of scanning images. The last I heard they
have support for PC's Mac's and Iris's. The Iris version requires that you
buy an interface card of some kind. The copier is around $6000 and the card is
under $2000. I don't know about the Mac interface, although I do know that
you get software with the Mac version. I have some in-house software to drive
the Iris version (not written by me).

Another scanner you might want to look at is the Mitsubishi scanner
SC_7500. We bought one a few months ago and are very pleased with
the image quality. It will scan in 24-bit true color at 400, 300, 200,
150, or 25 dpi. The scanner area is larger than most -- you can scan 11x17
images. Most of the scanners on the market are for Macintoshes or PCs.
The Mitsubishi scanner is also Sun compatable. The model we bought
had a GPIB interface so we had to buy a GPIB/VME card to fit into
the Sun. Mitsubishi is coming out with a SCSI interface soon which
will make interfacing to the Suns even easier. I'm not sure of the price,
but last year they were quoting retail of around $10,000 for the scanner.

They sell it, as well supporting it

	looking at in my opinion...

[I asked for color scanner reccomendations]

Thanks to all who have responded. We have narrowed it down to one model
now, the Sharp JX scanner (8-1/2 x 11 size)

I haven't seen it in action yet, but we are getting a demo of it tommorow.
It seems to work with Macs, IBM's and Amiga's. According to the salesman
it's cheaper and better to use the Amiga for it, because the Amiga is
cheaper than a Mac and has great built in graphics (with a standard format
that can be used with any amiga software package). On the IBM he said you
really need a Targa card to get the most out of the scanner (around $3K)
and even then the Targa card only works with specific software designed for
it (another several hundred to a few thousand dollars).

Plus we are (hopefully) getting a QMS color postscript printer to do the
printouts! nice.

Sidenote: we are selling our Xerox 4020 color inkjet printer for $375. email
me for details or see the message in misc.forsale posted last week. Higher
offers cheefully excepted :-)

Again, Thanks to all of you who have helped us choose.
