That is the title of a jazz composition I just heard on a college radio jazz program (WERS, Boston, 88.9). They were playing a tape of an excellent concert at the Berklee ('dats right, ucb) Performance Center by Antigravity (Jazz Band). The composer of (and lead on) `Bell Labs Blues' is Phil Scarff, a fine saxophonist [also rumored to do a little research at BTL Andover (Mass.)]. Aside from the novelty (`local scope') of the title of this piece, which was described as " ... an out-bop form treated in a traditional jazz style ... ", the group is well-worth looking forward to. Several of their other pieces were West African-influenced. In this concert, they were joined by several other fine musicians; Antigravity usually performs as a sextet in the Cambridge-Boston area. [Club & concert dates can be had from Cambridge Community Performances at (617) 876-4065. CCP sounds like a neat cooperative effort to promote local artists in a `rootsy' non-hype manner.] I was very impressed, and intend to go see them perform SOON. They have a date this Friday, Feb. 25 8pm, at the First Congregational Church of Cambridge, at 11 Garden Street. Should be a good opportunity to hear some fine music in a comfy NON-club setting. 'Dats wrong. Berklee Performance Center is the concert hall associated with the Berklee College of Music in Boston, on Mass. Ave Near the Pru. Supposedly, it one of the foremost jazz schools around.
