[net.music] Looking for Strawbs

tom (02/24/83)

Ahh, another Strawbs fan!!!

Their first 2 albums were: "Strawbs" and "Dragonfly". "Strawbs" was recorded
in May, 1969, and contains the tune "The Man Who Called Himself Jesus" (it
was very controversial in England at the time). They were on A&M and probably
out of print. HOWEVER, they were re-released as a double set entitled
"Early Strawbs" several years back, also on A&M. My copy was manufactured
in Canada, if that helps.

There is an earlier recording which was later made into an album. This was
"Sandy Denny and the Strawbs" which was recorded in 1968 in Copenhagen and
was the first time ANY of them had recorded. The record label is Hallmark.
It contains a beautiful version of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" which
Sandy Denny wrote and has been recorded many times since. Also has "Everyone
But Sam Was A Hypocrite", very Dave Cousins-ish.

Dave Cousins has one or two old solo albums which I've not been able to find
(can anyone help me?). The best of Strawbs album contains a song from
one of them. These were probably only available as imports. He has a new
(last year or 2) one out also which is LIVE, him and a friend on acoustic
guitars doing several old tunes dating back to their first 2 albums.
It is EXCELLENT! However the album notes said that this was to be a limited
edition of 10,000. Good luck. I don't have the name offhand 'cause a friend
is borrowing it.

Mike and others -- I can give more exact info via mail if you request but
this is probably too long already.
