[comp.graphics] TIFF ... why no converters

d88-sak@nada.kth.se (Sebastian ]kerman) (06/13/90)

Why isn't there any converters from TIFF format to others, like GIF and
such. I know of ONE program that can manage TIFF files and lots of converters
that don't. Why so. Are they unusually complicated or...
I'm interested to know where to find a TIFF convertion program for Unix
or Mac.
Please give me some pointers.

First there are a number of programs that convert TIFF files from one form
to another.

You don't state your platform but on the PC side there is Hijaak (commercial)
or vpic (shareware) will read a tiff file and save in another form.

Mac side has a couple as well, Imagestudie, colorstudio, Image and photoshop
come to mind.

BUT... I will go on to say...

It is infinitely easier to WRITE a proper TIFF file than it is to READ the
7 trillion possible variations of TIFF files!!

I'm also interested in finding a TIFF to GIF conversion utility that
converts in ONE STEP (without running out of memory on large images on a
640K PC) and a GIF print utility for the HP Laserjet II that can do dithering
on color/grayscale images (preferably callable from a batch file).

I tried to mail but it bounced...

Try the commercial (but inexpensive package) Hijaak.
Does TIFF to GIF and a zillion others. (OK maybe just a few dozen others)

Product from Inset systems. Look in your favorite software shop!

A program to convert TIFF file to GIF is available from Offe Enterprises,
the makers of Viuimage GIF/TIFF viewer. It is priced at $25.00, so
is cheap. It can also do black/white to grayscale conversion and store
output in GIF or TIFF. Their no. is 708-357-6679.
